The Nappy Pony,
As it is unsafe for your children to be unsupervised nearly all parents observe their children riding from the most accessible gate ,in an area nearest exit.As we know all parents run to a very busy schedule & normally have alot to do......so if you observe your child riding whilst, attending to little baby in the car seat, I bet the car becomes the main focus for your nappy pony.
To the child Mum or Dad is safety & security To the Pony it means finished ,rest & help
A little suggestion I have is that parents shut the gate, vary daily the position they observe from, help from daily .When something goes wrong either the child is tired ,scared, confused they look for Mum or Dad and even when they have just done something great Mum or Dad is the first person they look at. Our smart four legged friends 9 times out of ten, take the children in the direction of Mum & Dad when they think that is enough & or rider is looking in that direction that must be where they want to go.
When teaching younger children they always look at you when given a direction eg,if pony is leaving to the right( to go to gate, float ,)and you are on the right side of your child (near the gate),you can tell her/him to use his or her left rein(turn left) but your child will be looking right ( at you)No Matter how hard you pull those reins the pony will go in the direction they look, all your child's body posture is telling the pony to come right to MUM or DAD.Move to the left of your child tell them to come to you turn left to you .Look at me works a treat.
Ponies nearly aways have a direction they leave always place yourself in the correct position in the arena/paddock to assist our tiny riders to turn..........
We must encourage our little riders to look in the direction they are going to go.
To help re educate a nappy pony can be done very quickly by rest ,reward & where to ride forward.
To train a child's pony is a huge responsibility ,ponies must be confident, unflappable, obedient & worldly wise. Most of all the adults that train ponies must realise that children do not ride with strength in hand or leg ,they must be trained for a child.
..Depending on the issues you have to deal with firstly check your pony is not in pain.
Ill-fitting saddles is the biggest problem I come across turns a very nice pony into a little monster have a accredited saddler fit your saddle.
Bits & fit ponies have very small mouths regular dentist visits ask your accredited dentist if your bit fits & is suitable.
Weight a fat pony is not a happy pony causes all sorts of issues .
Your pony is a small horse built in exactly the same manner it wont "just do for a pony they carry your children or someone else's child"
